Speak Life Stockport

From Voice Leader Abbi

Over the past year, we have had the joy of running a few projects in schools local to our Voice groups. Music has this wonderful way of bringing people together and it was great fun to see children loving making music, as well as learning more about God and his love for us. We couldn’t keep this to ourselves, so here is a little about what we got up to!

Speak Life by TobyMac has become a bit of an anthem in our junior groups. It’s a catchy tune that never ceases to be a favourite amongst our junior choirs, but more than that, the words challenge us to think about the way we speak and respond to everything around us. Despite the difficulties, our perspectives on the world around us change for the better when we speak life and reflect on the things we are learning and are thankful for along the way. Using this base as our inspiration, we called these projects ‘Speak Life’ days and reached out to local schools.

Two schools in Stockport took us up on this, with classes from years 3-6 coming together across four days for a few hours of fun and singing at Coach House Church. We filled the sessions with a few Voice classics, including Speak Life, other songs that challenge us to reflect on our actions and our usual array of fun and silly warm-ups! The songs were interspersed with a few little reflections, encouraging us to think about the words and what we can learn from them. We had all sorts of conversations – how can our words change situations and how, at Voice, we believe that Jesus gives us life to the full. We reflected on what it means to be a role model and who we strive to be like, as well as how we can challenge ourselves to be someone who encourages and inspires those around us. They were a blast – so much so that the schools have signed up to more Speak Life days this coming year!

A personal highlight was to hear of how these children were open in talking about their experiences of speaking life and to learn about our faith, as well as seeing them having a blast musically as they air-guitar their way through songs all about God and his love for us. It was such a blessing to be part of these days and I pray that these songs and experiences continue to bless the children who came along, as well as those who will join similar projects moving forward.

Jesus: “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” – John 10:10
