Another In The Fire - Hillsong Worship
This song is a great reminder for me that God is always there whenever I need Him. Even if we are stuck in a fire or lost at sea, God is present in all of our situations; He is there to give us hope and to show us that we are never alone. God also really wants to chat with us and for us to get to know him more. The line in the song which says, “nothing stands between us” is a great way of explaining how there is nothing stopping us from reaching out to God. Sometimes it might feel like God isn’t there or we cannot hear his voice but He shows up in ways you might not expect and He is always listening. - Daisy

#MusicMonday Voice of Truth - Casting Crowns

This song is important to me because sometimes, people judge me, saying nasty things about me but, this song reminds me that I should always listen to the Voice of Truth. It says for one of the lyrics, “But the Voice of Truth says do not be afraid” That lyric tells me that I don’t need to be afraid of what people are telling me and that I can just listen and believe what God says. I always listen to this song when I’m having a hard time, it reminds me that God will always be by my side no matter what people say about me. - Ashleigh

I love a good family tree! 🌳 It is fascinating to see who came before us, what their role and place in society was and how a particular person or family came to be. Jesus’ family tree is the same.

In Ruth 4, we see Boaz giving the opportunity to be the kinsman redeemer to the closest relative. It does not say why, but this relative chooses to pass on the right to Boaz. Through this, Boaz marries Ruth and they have a son. This is part of the role of a kinsman redeemer - to preserve the family name and line. Obed (their son) was the grandfather of David, which formed part of Jesus’ family line. Their actions fulfilled part of God's plan to redeem humanity.

Redemption, or God rescuing and restoring us, is seen throughout the whole story of Ruth. Although we don’t always see it, God brings so much good out of circumstances that are brought about through the presence of sin in the world. You can see it all the way through the Bible, particularly through Jesus family tree. He redeems people from their sin and the consequences of sin again and again. One beautifully clear example is seen in the women mentioned in the genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1, of which Ruth is one. Each one is a story of brokenness or hardship that God redeemed, and ultimately result in the birth of our Redeemer.

Take a few minutes to jot down some of the things we have learned from Ruth and her story and what you’re going to do with that knowledge. Each time I read Ruth, my main take-away changes. This time, I feel challenged to be generous with what I have, as Boaz was. I also feel challenged to be less selfish and to put what God wants above what I want. I hope that I can put some of this into practice over the next week. - Abbi

In chapter 3, Naomi instructs Ruth to approach Boaz to be her kinsman redeemer. Spreading the corner of her garment over Boaz in 3:9 is actually a request for marriage, a custom still practised in some cultures today. Boaz is not the obvious choice, because in Israelite tradition it was the closest male relative who had the primary responsibility to remarry the widow. But Naomi recognises the kindness of Boaz, witnessed again in 3:15 giving barley to Ruth, and knows that he would be willing to become Ruth’s protector.

Boaz is a man of real integrity. He does not neglect the Israelite law but gives first priority to the nearest relative before accepting Ruth’s request. He promises in 3:13 that, if that relative is unwilling, he would redeem the family property and arrange Ruth’s honourable marriage.

We hear in this chapter of Ruth’s nobility too. Her loyalty and devotion to Naomi have already given her a reputation of being of noble character (3:11) and she chooses not to chase after younger men (3:10) but seeks to do what is right for Naomi out of selfless love. Even though she is a Moabite, she embraces the faith of Israel and conforms her life to the will of God through loving obedience.

In our modern western culture it is easy to over-romanticise love and lose sight of some of the other really important values which underpin strong, loving relationships; selflessness, devotion, nobility, honour, faithfulness, kindness. It is in these things that we can better reflect God’s love for us in our love for others. - Simon

God made provisions for all of the people in Israel, some of which were through the community. In the same way, we are to share what we have. It can be difficult as a young person or young adult, but loving others through sharing what we have is a key thing that sets us apart from the rest of this world (John 13:34-35).

Isaiah 58 says this:

“No, this is the kind of fasting I want: Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free, and remove the chains that bind people. Share your food with the hungry, and give shelter to the homeless. Give clothes to those who need them, and do not hide from relatives who need your help." (v. 6-7)

I want to encourage you to look at things going on around you, and see if there is anything we can do to help. Whether it is donating some food to your local food bank, supporting organisations such as Barnabus (my local homelessness outreach), buying your clothes from places like Outside In (wear one, share one) or simply praying for these projects, we can be living out these principles and glorifying God through serving others. - Abbi

Ruth 2:14-23

At this time in Israel, they followed the Law that God gave throughout Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers. God made a special provision for those who were poor. There wasn't social security, and so those who farmed land were commanded to not pick up every last bit of their crops. “When you harvest the crops of your land, do not harvest the grain along the edges of your fields, and do not pick up what the harvesters drop. Leave it for the poor and the foreigners living among you. I am the LORD your God.” (Leviticus 23:22) Those who were poor in society were then able to go and pick up the leftovers.

In this passage, Boaz goes above and beyond this, as he is a man of noble character and respects the sacrifice that Ruth has made for Naomi. In order to help them, he commands his workers to 'pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up...' This is even after he has invited Ruth to eat with him and the workmen and she has had her fill! - Abbi

In Ruth 2:1-13, we see Ruth struggling to find some food. This was to be expected after her previous decision to go with Naomi to Bethlehem. As an unmarried, foreign widow, Ruth was almost guaranteed a hard life in Bethlehem; her loyalty to Naomi came at a huge cost.

As Ruth was picking up leftover grain for food, a man named Boaz noticed her amongst his harvesters. He had heard about her act of loyalty to Naomi and was so struck that he offered them a safe place, food, water and safety from the societal dangers as a woman in her position. He allowed her to glean under the watchful eye of his reliable workers.

Boaz’s response was very unexpected for those times. It would be expected that due to Ruth’s societal position, he should disregard her. Ruth even asks, “Why have I found such favour in your eyes that you notice me- a foreigner?” Yet, he saw Ruth as a woman with courage who made an honourable choice. He did not let societal rules change how he responded to Ruth’s act of courage.

Do you ever listen to what others/society says about someone rather than what God says about them?

I pray that God would teach me to see with His eyes. - Daniella

This half term, we will be doing a series of posts on the book of Ruth!

Ruth 1:1-22

The book of Ruth starts by telling us about a family that moved away from Bethlehem. This man, Elimelek along with his wife Naomi, and two sons: Mahlon and Kilion. They moved because of the famine and went to live for a while in the country of Moab. While they were there, Elimelek died, leaving Naomi and her two sons, who went out and got married to two Moabite women, Orpah and Ruth. Verses 4 and 5 tell us that after they had lived in Moab for ten years, both of the sons died too. So Naomi was left all on her own. Naomi heard that God had provided food to the people in Bethlehem so decided to go back. She said to Ruth and Orpah that they should go back to their family homes. The relationship between Moab and Israel wasn't always good and Naomi knew there would be nothing for the two women if they returned with her to Bethlehem. Orpah left and went back to her family, but Ruth refused and went with Naomi to Bethlehem.

I find Naomi's faith a really amazing thing. Several times in this first chapter of Ruth she states that God had "turned his hand against her" and "made her life bitter". But normally when something bad happens to us, we can often find ourselves moving further away from God and the things he has for us. Naomi made the choice to go back to God. She never accused God of doing wrong against her, she just acknowledged his power over all circumstances. She remembered, despite her pain, that God is a God of blessings. Because of her willingness to go back to her home and back to God, he blessed her so much.

Ruth also had a great deal of faith. She had rights not to leave with Naomi yet she chose to do so out of love and service to her mother-in-law. She tells Naomi that "Your people will be my people and your God will be my God." And again, her willingness to do this meant she was blessed and used by God in incredible ways. - Cai
