On the 14th July a team of young musicians from Voice will be travelling to Estonia to take part in our first international venture! We have been invited by missionary friends and the leaders of Viljandi Baptist Church to see how we can use music to share God’s love and hope with people there.
Estonia has a very musical heritage and a real love of singing. The country is famous for its national singing festivals that bring together hundreds of thousands of people, festivals which were instrumental in uniting the nation as it strived for independence from the Soviet Union, finally achieved in 1988. Since independence, the country has been forming and re-establishing its own identity, culture and traditions. People there are not anti-God, but many are apathetic towards things which are associated with being brought from elsewhere or with occupation, including some aspects of religion. Voice will be looking to harness their love for music as we seek to share our faith in Jesus and show the people there that they are loved by a creator God and that salvation is for all!
Whilst there the Voice team will be joining Estonian friends in running a music camp for young people, leading towards outreach concerts, church services and youth events. We will be based in the town of Viljandi, staying at a retreat centre on the borders of Lake Viljandi and using the facilities of Viljandi Baptist Church for our rehearsals and concerts. On the final day, before flying back to the UK, the team will enjoy a day of sightseeing in the historic capital city Tallinn. We are all really looking forward to this exciting and unique experience and trust that will use us for good in the lives of the people that we meet.
